Forever Asheville Painting Work in Progress

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Working on a new digital/acrylic painting and I thought it would be fun to share the steps and give some hints and tips. I started with a reference photo that I took this past summer as I was walking past someones car.  The idea that this truly represented Asheville, NC came to me immediately that it had the laid back feeling.

Now I needed to open it in Corel Painter 11 and I painted it with artist oils brushes looking to get as much of a brushstroke as possible into the painting. While I used the photo as photo reference it’s clear all the changes made to the painting as it is transforming into a painting.

Next I felt it looked a little dull and needed some punching up. Opened the image in Photoshop and tested out a few TOPAZ FILTERS on it and ended up using something in TOPAZ ADJUST. This gave more detail and also punched up the colors. When I was finished with that I opened NIK SHARPENER 3.0 and did some sharpening on the painting to pop more of the brushstrokes so I know it will print well. If you want to check out these filters use the links to TOPAZ and when you check out put MSHOLIN into the coupon code and you will get a discount. Same with NIK filters. Coupon Code: MSHOLIN gets a discount on them.

Below is the final digital painting. Next step will be to add acrylic paint to the canvas. I will update this post and show the before and after paintings:  the digital file vs the acrylic painted canvas. Final version will be Pigment Inks with Acrylic Paint.

Niagara School of Imaging Digital Painting Pro Tip

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Every August for the past few years I have been asked to teach at the Niagara School of Imaging in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. This is the a fantastic, well run, fun school to be at! Everyone in my workshops there always has a great time learning Corel Painter and goes home with a fully hand embellished painted canvas print! NSI spares no expense to be sure all the students and instructors are happy. We all write a Pro Tip for the newsletters and mine was just published this week. Take a look at it: Marilyn Pro Tip about Portrait Painting

Here’s a little clip from it: “Portrait Painting:
The greatest challenge is not learning to use Corel Painter 11 software, it is in the artists struggle to paint portraits and create their own style of portrait painting. There are those that would like to be Picassos and paint the paintings as mere references to the physical person, but more often than not the photographers struggle is to balance themselves on that thin line between looking “too photographic” and attempting to have the portrait still be “painterly”.

Come and join us there August 16-20. You will leave knowing how to paint with Corel Painter!

Color Managment Work Around for Corel Painter 11

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Color Shift on Clone Source
I had been going a little crazy with the Clones and Quick Clones shifting colors in Painter 11. I had tried everything in color management to fix the problem and match up the profiles. I’m just so “not a techy”. I paint and usually it prints just like my screen which I do color manage. So this was out of my league until it hit me……
Why Bother Color Managing AT ALL?
I solved the problem and it’s really EASY! Just watch this short (really short) movie on how to avoid this problem quickly!

Marilyn Self Portrait Painting

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Was working on another one to use for new avatars and business cards and more and after three days of working on the other pose…trashed it to the “look at later” folder and started a totally different pose and painting and this one just flowed along easily. I am going to finish up some tweaks and details on it but wanted to get it out there to be seen!
Always remember that its okay to not finish if it’s not flowing…another day, another painting may just grab you and run!

Walking in the Clouds Painting

Flemish Rub Brush for Corel Painter

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Tonight I am doing a webinair for the Digital Art Academy and I will be using the Flemish Rub brush as one of the brushes in the paintings. This is an old brush that goes way back to Painter 5 and John Derry the Daddy of Painter designed it. It is on the cd’s that come as extra materials with Corel Painter. Because back in 2005 there was discussion about this brush on the Digital Painting Forum I am sharing everything here that John said about the brush and the new controls we can use with it. Please be sure to visit John Derrys website and enjoy his other free downloads including lessons and Johns fabulous set of Painter Brushes!
DISCUSSION FROM THE DIGITAL PAINTING FORUM:
October 2005
REGARDING THE FLEMISH RUB BRUSH:
Directly from John Derry:
Hi:

I thought you might like a bit of background regarding the Flemish Rub variant. I created this brush when we were working on the Painter 5 release. Jeremy has appropriated it for his Brush Goodies and, avid Painter maestro that he is, he has seeded this brush variant to many users. On with the story…

One of the techniques of the Flemish oil painters was to use their forearm to effectively blend a large swath of wet oils on the canvas. Obviously, they ended up with a mess on their arm (in the name of a Art!), but the effect created a smooth blend of color on the canvas. I wanted to create a brush that had some of the same appeal and, after a bit of experimentation, the Flemish Rub variant was born.

If you’d like to get your hands on the Flemish Rub brush, you need look no further than your Painter IX CD. To locate it, go to Extras: Brushes: Painter 5 Brushes: Artists: Flemish Rub.xml. Copy this file to on your system to Corel Painter IX: Brushes: Painter Brushes: Artists folder and the next time you open the Artists category, there you’ll find Flemish Rub awaiting your exploration! Note that you can control the pull of this brush via the Grain adjuster.

I hope that you’ll enjoy this oldie-but-goodie variant!

Viva la Painter!
Hi Again:

One thing I forgot to mention with regard to the Flemish Rub variant…this variant (and all pre-Painter 6 variants) were created before we introduced full 360° dab rotation. As a result, these older brush require a slight tweak to perform as expected.

With the Flemish Rub variant active, navigate to Brush Controls: Angle palette and adjust the Angle Range slider to 360°. That’s it! With this adjustment, the brush’s width with follow your stroke direction.

Having done this, you’ll now be a Painter Brush Mechanic!

This original version of the Flemish Rub variant uses a highly squeezed Circular Dab (making it rice shaped) with Jitter applied to produce a stroke that varies the amount of smeared underlying paint across the width of the brush. The resulting smeared paint has a wavy character.

In playing with Flemish Rub variant, I noticed that Grain Expression (Brush Controls: General Palette) is set to None. It is a far more expressive tool when the Grain Expression is set to Pressure. This enables a pressure-controlled smearing effect. Less pressure minimizes smearing; more pressure exaggerates smearing.

Viva la Painter!
Obviously, any variant can be—and I highly encourage it—adjusted to the user’s own tastes. The other thing I discovered is that I like the way Flemish Rub looks with the Drip Method subcategory set to Drip (the original Flemish Rub is set to Grainy Drip). When set to Drip, the resulting strokes have a silky smooth quality to them.
